MSM hosted the assembly of the Lagoon Beacon for the KOITIIP project in Kiribati, funded by the World Bank.
The Kiribati archipelago, made up of remote islands and atolls with extensive shallow water lagoons, presents unique challenges for maritime safety and signalling. The Kiribati Outer Islands Transport Infrastructure Investment Project (KOITIIP), funded by the World Bank, aims to improve transport infrastructure and maritime safety in these critical areas for sustainable development.
MSM is participating in the project in collaboration with its regional commercial partner for Asia-Pacific and Oceania, M-NAV SOLUTIONS, by supplying advanced Aids to Navigation (AtoN) solutions. Our facilities in Valencia recently welcomed representatives from M-NAV, construction company Hall Contracting, engineering firm Arup, KOITIIP project team members, and representatives of the end users.
The purpose of the visit was to conduct a Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) of a key AtoN element: the Lagoon Beacon, equipped with the self-contained LED lantern MCL360S. The process involved the full assembly and functional validation of the beacon, designed to mark access routes through shallow waters in Kiribati’s outer islands, where environmental conditions require specialized solutions.
The result was a successful outcome that validated the system’s functionality and provided key insights for the installation phase. This milestone strengthens MSM and M-NAV’s shared commitment to offering innovative AtoN solutions tailored to the specific challenges of each maritime environment.
With this project, MSM is proud to contribute to safer navigation and sustainable development for the island communities of Kiribati.
