Automation of the Lighthouse of the Sálvora Island.

Published on Monday, 20 February of 2017

MSM has carried out the automation of the Lighthouse of Sálvora Island.

We could say that it is an automation more out of the multiple ones done; however, on this occasion, the systems used are pioneers in the field of Aids to Navigation.

On the one hand, there was the need to maintain the historic optical system with a 1rst-order glass lens, its luminous character and range and, on the other hand, to automate and update the installation with the most modern means. Being one of the few remaining lighthouses in the world with Otter screen system, finding a solution that suited the required needs would not be easy.

Finally, MSM in collaboration with the Port Authority of Vilagarcía de Arousa designed a system that uses as main light source a 150W LED light (of virtual filament) and a directional system associated with the movement of the Otter screens based on LED technology too, which provides a red beam in the sector where previously the Otter screens occulted the flash.

With this solution, the luminous characteristic, the range and the optical system of the lighthouse have been preserved. All this complemented with a cutting-edge monitoring and control equipment. In addition, as standby equipment, a rotating sectorized beacon with dual motor and LED projectors has been installed, which faithfully reproduces the characteristic of the lighthouse. The installation of this beacon has also required a special design; being about an island and with the need to be visible in 360º, it has been necessary to study its location, meticulously. Finally, it was decided to replace the dome cap by this beacon. In order to make easier the maintenance works, its dual rotating motor has been installed inside the lighthouse and a special transmission system, enables its rotation.

The execution of this type of works is a further step in our commitment to apply the latest technology in traditional lighthouses, thus preserving our historical heritage.

From here, we would like to express our gratitude to the Port Authority of Vilagarcía de Arousa for their collaboration in the design of the solution and for relying on us for this renewal.
